Skandamata

 

Skandmata is fifth form of the nine Durgas and is also known by the names Parvati, Maheshwari and Gauri. She has the name Skandmata as she is the mother of Skandkumar or God Kartikeya. God Kartikeya is considered as the General of the army of devtas and is also known by the name Subramanya.

The story goes that there was a demon named Tarkasur who pleased God Brahma and obtained a boon that he should die only by the hands of the son of Shiv. He was cunning and thought that God Shiv is a Yogi and he will never marry so Tarkasur would become immortal. However divinity had another plan. Parvati married God Shiv and a son was born who was named Skandkumar. He killed Tarkasur.

The form of Skandmata is considered a particularly nourishing form of the divine mother and benefactress. This form is a kind form that has the qualities of a mother who looks after the world as her child. There is also a creative power associated with this form. Her mantra is

       
"Ya devi sarvbhuteshu matre rupen samsthita

Namastasyai namastasyai namastasyai namo namah"
